The Guide to Post Holiday Shopping

Some people think the key to successful holiday shopping is getting in when the sales are starting during Black Friday. While that may be true if you are looking to get new products or want a must have item before it runs out, the real gems to be had in terms of shopping are the day after Christmas.

Shopping after Christmas is painful for most

The day after Christmas is usually a day reserved for relaxing around the house or playing with the new toy that you received as a gift. Retailers are hoping you don’t think along those lines and are ready to pick the store’s carcass dry of all the items that didn’t sell from the Black Friday to Christmas eve period. So what can you do to get your after Christmas discount on? Hit the stores the first day after Christmas.

Shop the minute after Christmas hits

Being Thriftychick we really love to encourage shopping, but that’s never been as much the case as it is right after Christmas. Stores discount items up to 80% after Christmas. On lower margin items stores go as high as 90%. The object of it all is to move everything they have. Empty out items that have not sold for the entire year.

Stores to hit

There are two types of stores that you really want to hit once the day after Christmas comes: the big box retailers that are in trouble and a small privately owned boutique. Let’s look at the first. The retailer that is in financial trouble. What that means is, open your newspaper, look in the business section and find the retailers that are in trouble. If the paper says, CompUSA is closing (it is) but they haven’t announced it yet, go to CompUSA the day after Christmas and shop. They will heavily discount everything and a manager can even give you a better deal if you ask for it.

The business section will also tell you what stores you should hit to get the maximum discount. You are literally picking the carcasses of stores that may forever go away. It’s a crude analogy but that’s what’s happening. Why buy a LCD TV at Best Buy when you can get it for a whole lot cheaper at Circuit City. Why is it cheaper? It is cheaper Because Circuit City is not posting great numbers financially. They will try to sell as much as they can and get lower margins, as long as sales are going up.

You won’t need to figure out financial statements, just find out who is not doing so well, and go shop there.

Boutiques, Boutiques, Boutiques

Smaller stores and boutiques are the answer in finding that deal that you may not get at larger stores. We’re addressing clothing at this stage. If you are looking for designer items from last Spring that can actually work for the next season, they still have items that just haven’t sold, or were misplaced on the sales floor. They may even cut you a deal if you know who and how to talk to the person running the boutique.

The further away from Christmas the harder it gets

The day after Christmas is the best day to shop, the day after the day after Christmas is the second best day to shop. It keeps going down from that point on. New Years sales may keep the torch burning for new items, but the sales just are not that good.

When all else fails, use the internet

Being a web based website, I would normally stress shopping online, but for after Christmas sales, nothing beats physically going to a store and buying what you find and what may be left over. If that fails though, the internet is a good last resort. Use sites like Thriftychick, Grechen’s Closet, KeyCode Coupons, The Bargainist to find really good deals that are published every minute.

When the 26th hits and leaves, make sure you are not caught flat footed. Shop on!
