Must Haves

I’m not one for tie-ins.

I’m not one for tie-ins. Usually they are just promotional marketing ploys to repackage products you would have never wanted until it was associated with a movie or other Hollywood creation. Basically, tie-ins prey upon the susceptibility of preteens. But there is something different about the products and packages coming out in association with the Devil Wears Prada. Yes, they are still marketing efforts capitalizing on the buzz of a movie, but due to the entrenchment of the fashion industry in the movie, what would be cheesy, cheap product tie-ins are instead from high-end retailers. An almost anti-tie-in, the Angels Wear Dior set
, is perfect for those of us who like a neutral, just-a- little-touch- of-makeup-to- make-us-glow palette. The set is valued at $68.50, but sold for $50 at Sephora and includes a 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Incognito, DiorKiss in Gloss Pink, and a mini DiorShow Mascara in Black. For those of us who may work for a devil, and know the best way to keep your cool with a boss from hell is to act like an angel.

Must Haves

Yesterday you finally packed away your winter clothes… yes

Yesterday you finally packed away your winter clothes… yes, it’s the end of June, but you weren’t procrastinating, you just figured that with all this climate change business, better to have them handy, just in case. Along with the turtlenecks and wool pants, you folded in your flannel PJ’s, and while sleeping in the buff is theoretically sexy, not so much when you wake up in the middle of the night, go to the kitchen for a glass of water, and encounter your roommate’s boyfriend snarfing some left over Indian food from the fridge. But you refuse to sweat through your flannels or go groping for a robe in the middle of the night. Cover up, just barely, with the Ashley camisole from Cosabella. It’s still sexy, but can also function as sleepwear, and is so soft and sheer that it’s like being nude, without the embarrassment. Did I mention it is made in Italy?… because everyone deserves a little nighttime luxury. On sale for $43.99 at Bare Necessities.

Must Haves

It never fails

It never fails: if you forget your umbrella in your front hallway, it will start raining as soon as you are too far from home to go back to get it, and if you lug it around all day, sunshine. You need something to change your umbrella karma… or at least umbrella-related psychology—instead of seeing an umbrella as wholly utilitarian, see it also as a must-have rainy day accessory. Get an umbrella that is so cute that you’ll want to whip it out at the sign of the first gray cloud. In case you still end up being rainy day weather forgetful, this printed umbrella is not only deco-mod cute, but also comes with a storage cover and compresses to a size that will definitely fit in your handbag, so carrying it around won’t be a hassle. $16 at Urban Outfitters.

Must Haves

While you love to dance

While you love to dance, you were never one for ballet. You are much more into free styling, also known as making it up as you go along. Khurana’s beaded slippers provide the comfort of a ballerina slipper, but with sparkling beads and sequins intermingled with southeast Asian influence to jazz them up. As part of Faire Frou Frou’s summer clearance, get either pair for half off ($52 or $45.50).

Jewelry Chick

This pick is dedicated to my girl

This pick is dedicated to my girl, Lee Lee, who quit her semi-corporate job (she used to sit in the cube next to me), to pursue her dreams—which come in the form of a nursing degree with a specialty in infectious diseases. The weekend before she left work, we stopped into a boutique together and she immediately fell in love with these earrings—she cooed and fawned over them, but in newfound restraint, vowed to wait until her first new paycheck (as a waitress) before even this minor splurge. Hey, if she is going to go do humanitarian work in Africa, she needs to learn how to go without, or at least defer. They are quintessential Lee Lee: subtle indigenous influence applied to a free-spirited design—and they would be perfect for her international adventures (off hospital hours, of course). So Lee Lee, to send you off to do your thing with a little luck charm (though you don’t need it), here’s a code (MCI20) to get 20% off these Bijoux Luck Red Paisley Earrings, or anything else you’d like to purchase at Max and Chloe (that goes for all you readers out there, too).

Beauty Chick

Your hair requires more ritual than an ancient Druid ceremony

Your hair requires more ritual than an ancient Druid ceremony: shampoo in hot water to open the follicles, deep condition in cold water to close the follicles, run smoothing balm through damp hair, blow dry with a round brush, making sure to blow downward and turn the brush inward, separate into layers and slowly run your $30 straightening iron over each piece, set with hairspray and pray to god that when you step outside it will not immediately turn into a giant frizz ball. Yet no matter how meticulous you are with your hair preparation, it seems that nothing can guard it against the ruinous capabilities of humidity. And then there was the Sedu Ionic Ceramic Tourmaline Straightener. This 1.5” flat iron will heat its ceramic plates up to 280ºC to straighten your hair and keep it relaxed, smooth and frizz-free all day (and even the next). You can read 2,653 reviews (with before and after pictures) and see why it will be one of the best investments you’ve ever made. It is unequivocally the best $125.95 I’ve personally spent, ever—I’ve used it for over a year on my wavy/frizz-prone hair and have never been happier with a product. Free $20 travel pouch and free shipping from Folica.
