I was a little selfish

Marc Jacobs Marc Jacobs

I’m sorry. I waited a day to post information about this sale, but I had to be a little selfish and pick up as much as I could before I shared this information with everyone. A rep from Ron Herman dropped this little nugget: they are having a sale on select items of 50% to 75% off from September 28th (yesterday) till October 15th. If you’ve gone to the site before you’ll understand that in the next couple of days practically anything worth having will be gone waaayyy before the 15th. I’ve already rifled through some items yesterday. Here’s the link. (yes, that is a Marc Jacobs bag)

Paper Chick

And now for something completely different.

And now for something completely different.

Maxwell-Silver has this delightful newspaper vase for sale. According to their site it”s made from an ancient book binding technique. The paper is fanned around recycled aluminum and gives a really soft look to the vase. You may have to wait about 2 weeks before you get it but you”ll love it nonetheless.

Best Bets

New York Magazine Best Bets
I’m more than a little stoked for this shopping event being held by New York Mag. 15 to 65% off retail items are an absolute must when I am working on a shoe string budget for fashion and pretty much everything else. I also won’t feel so selfish knowing that a portion of the proceeds go to the fund for Public Schools.

Here’s a taste of some of the names in fashion being featured: Armand Diradourian, Hyde, Lacoste, Lilla P, Roberta Freymann
Sean. There will also be top accessory, beauty, home and kids brands featured. You’re welcome.

When: Tuesday October 3, 2006
Where: The Altman Building, 135 West 18th Street

Thriftychick Guide to Fall Denim

Denim is the staple of American fashion. It is tried and true, but it also evolves with the seasons. Internationally, denim is also becoming part of the daily apparel diet. It can be dressed up or down, it can be worn with practically anything, and has become “workplace acceptable,” even in professional settings.

This week in the Thriftychick guides, we look at the best in fall denim. Many collections have arrived, and the prices have gone up (as usual), but we are determined to find you the best bang for your buck.

First up is the American standard: Levi’s. Levi’s are really the beginning and end of the denim conversation when it comes to affordable (though not always) and stylish pieces. This season, Levi’s is touting everything super-slim: their Skinny 503s, Skinny, Outlaw Skinny, Low Skinny 545 and the premium {Capital E} Skimmer. The first thing to understand about these jeans are that they are truly skinny jeans. Women with thicker thighs, hips and waists need to stay away from these jeans. Levi’s are not known for stretching as well as other brands, but their jeans do have a certain amount of give. We highly recommend the premium skimmer jeans, although they are pricier, they are worth it for fit and feel. Prices start at $19.98 and run up to $158 (skimmer jeans).

James Jeans

There’s nothing “thrifty” about these jeans—the lowest priced pair on eLuxury is the Tom 5-Pocket Straight Leg Dark Tulsa at $155.00. So no, these are not bargain jeans. We point these out, though, because they are very comfortable, primarily because cashmere is one of the components in the fabric. Out of all the denim available (that we’ve tried), these are most likely to have the best fit for a range of body types. James haven’t jumped on the skinny bandwagon, so you’re more likely to find a fit for “normal” hips and thighs. If you’re looking for a deal on these jeans, one of the best places to go is eBay, but beware of the fakes! Make sure you purchase from an authentic dealer, or to eliminate all doubt, you can find them on sale at Bluefly or online boutiques. {link}

Gap’s denim selection is standard fare. Not really pushing the envelope, but also not disappointing either. They are go-to jeans when you want style and affordability. Gap as a whole is pushing the skinny fit trend—witness their Audrey Hepburn ads as evidence. Skinny fit for Gap is not subjective, they really mean skinny. They also have a good focus on curvier jeans with their boot cut styles. They definitely have the market on understanding a women’s lower half when it comes to denim. Prices start at $48.00{link}

Joe’s Jeans

Here’s another brand within the realm of designer denim. Very similar to James Jean in terms of washes, Joe’s differs when it comes to fits. The former normally wears better than the latter, but Joe’s are usually less expensive than James. The J’s tend to really confuse at times. So what does Joe’s offer? Joe’s is all about bringing a rock star quality to the jeans. They started out with the Socialite (skinny) and Honey (curvy) as their mainstays, and have branched out from there. Their new fits are more figure-loving, with a variety of washes for each fit. Joe’s have really done their homework when it comes to appreciating the female form. Prices start at $125

Remember when it was absolutely essential to have at least one pair of Sevens? Times have changed, but the brand has remained pretty consistent. With seven styles to choose from, and a sharper focus on wash and styling than fit, Seven for all Mankind has held steadfast to putting look above flattery. While fit takes a back seat, Seven’s are still known to be some of the most comfortable jeans on the market. Our recommendation this season is the Flynt. Seven’s are also counterfeited often, make sure you double-check the tags to ensure that they are authentic if you are not getting them from a retailer.There are many other brands to choose from this season: Paper Denim & Cloth tend to be Tom Cruise’s favorite, True Religion, Yanuk, Antik, Miss Sixty, Abercrombie and many others too numerous to mention make denim choices less than easy. We recommend prioritizing fit when shopping for denim. Shop for the brand that best fits your body type; most brands tend to skew toward a certain type, and once you’ve found which one best hugs your curves, you can remain brand loyal. Once you get the fit right, the styling falls into place—with styling options that run the gamut for every line of denim, there is no short supply, and something that should appeal to your tastes.

Not in the devious way (well, okay, maybe that too), but in the artsy, let me see how I can take several different pretty things and turn them into one gorgeous thing sort of way. But being crafty when it comes to business? You could use a little help with that. Must Haves

The terrorists have won.

The terrorists have won. Or at least, that is how you feel now that, due to new airline restrictions, instead of wheeling your carry-on onto the plane you have to check it (even if it’s just an overnight business trip, you can’t be expected to live without your lipgloss and styling gel). So now that your carry-on is being tossed into the cargo hold, you need a new plane bag to hold all your four hour coast-to-coast plane ride [non-liquid] survival gear: Vanity Fair and Elle, video iPod, neck pillow, sound cancelling headphones (because you always end up one row in front of the shrieking toddler), pack of gum (although your ears are going to pop anyway), etc. The F-1 Flight Bag is specially made for these purposes, with a sleek over-the-shoulder design and an icon print that will let everyone know that no one can scare you into being grounded, even if they do take away your mascara. Available from Flight 001.
